Sweeney Todd

31Dec07

Those of you following this site may have noticed that I was excited for Sweeney Todd. But after all was said and done (read: I watched it), I think the movie fell short of the hype that it’d been riding.

Right now I’m reading Moviemakers’ Master Class: Private Lessons from the World’s Foremost Directors (gaudy title, right?) and I stumble across an interview with Tim Burton!

Why, that name sounds familiar… hasn’t he done something recently? Some movie about a musical or something?

So I thought I’d enlighten you with my recently gleaned knowledge of his past, and give you UNPRECEDENTED ACCESS to his first live action short film!

I Am Legend

18Dec07

So, is there a Will Smith religion yet?

Would mass be held before each of his movies?

Do the truly devoted followers of his message attend every midnight opening of all of his movies?

I don’t have the answers to any of these, but if he makes any more awesome action movies, I suspect time will bring us more Will Smith worshipers than you could shake a stick at.

New contest alert! New contest alert! In the same year that the world officially went ape-shit over the environment and Al Gore actually won the Nobel Peace Prize, it turns out that National Geographic has something to say about the world, too!

Though the deadline is January 31, 2008, since the contest was announced this year I feel no qualms about lumping this contest with those other two items!

So, everyone’s favorite magazine about earth, the environment, and native tribeswomen’s breasts is hosting a contest. Now, what’re the requirements, you may be asking? Well, if you’re too lazy to click the link above and/or too much in love with this site to leave toward others, I’ll break it down for you.

Two categories. One is the short film category, the other is PSA. While the PSA should be no longer than 30 seconds, the film can go up to 5 minutes, and both need to address the theme “What You Do Counts”.

1st place in both categories receives a bundle of cash and a trip to Washington, D.C. to the world gathering of National Geographic Explorers, and there will be a monetary prize for the fan favorite in both categories as well.

And good news for me, bad news for a lot of filmmakers, it is open to college students only. Now maybe this means you just need to enroll at your local community college so you can get the ID, maybe not. But either way, you do need to show proof of your student status in your application.

So get your cameras, your jeeps and your safari gear and get filmin’! This contest sounds meaningful and that is important!

This review does come out a few weeks before the actual movie’s release date, so if you can remember to check back here after you see it and let me know what you think, I’d be delighted to hear from you!

So I saw Walk Hard a few nights ago and I thought I’d take a moment to tell you how I feel about it.

I feel confused.

I don’t know whether to recommend it to you or to ask that the movie not officially come out. It’s definitely not the funniest movie I have ever seen, nor is it to the worst.

But just because it’s between those two spectrums does not make it average by any means.

Only got around to reviewing four films this month, but I can promise you that number is going to shoot up for December! I’ve got lots of movie viewings on the horizon!

In order of must-see-age.

JUNO - A funny, serious tale about a quirky girl getting pregnant and how she deals with it. Well-acted, well-written, well-directed, well worth the time to go see it.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - New Coen brothers’ film is dark, strange, and alluring. See it for the character studies as well as a treatment on pure evil.

BEOWULF  - Good if you’ve got the extra money to spare for 3D so at least you can talk about it with your friends. Only real action movie out right now?

LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA - Don’t. But if you do, you get to see a really horny older man having relations with attractive and often nude younger women. But he only does it because he’s in love with an ugly and poor actress. BLEH.

Hope your November went well! December should be a great month for movies!

Juno

30Nov07

I just saw a screening of Juno last night.

I highly recommend seeing it. I also recommend reading the review.

Juno, the lead role played by Ellen Page, is, as we find out immediately, quite undoubtedly pregnant.

Paulie Bleeker, played by Michael Cera, is, as we find out immediately, quite undoubtedly an awkwardly shaped runner and the father of Juno’s baby.
